- The Collection: "Romeo and Juliet: The Metamorphosis" is a contemporary reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s classic, exploring themes of love, transformation, and duality.
A major milestone for the “Romeo and Juliet: The Metamorphosis” collection has finally been achieved. My collection, inspired by the Shakespearean classic, was exhibited in front of the British royal family. And no, this isn’t clickbait: it really happened. It was an emotional moment that added even more value to the collection and my artistic career.
I still can’t believe I managed to present my work to the royal family. The tension and excitement were palpable, but seeing my collection appreciated in such a prestigious setting made 2024 one of the best years of my life.
My Journey
My name is Alex Righetto, and I’m an Italian artist. After exhibiting in Times Square, a solo show in Miami, and touring Europe in 2023, I returned to London with a unique opportunity: to showcase my solo exhibition at Windsor Castle. “Romeo and Juliet: The Metamorphosis” is a project I began in 2021, and it has continued to grow and evolve.
The Concept Behind the Collection
“Romeo and Juliet: The Metamorphosis” is a contemporary and innovative reinterpretation of the Shakespearean classic. The collection explores love, transformation, and duality themes, using a blend of traditional and modern techniques. I wanted to create a dialogue between the past and the present, showing how the emotions and conflicts of an ancient story can still resonate in our contemporary world. My works offer a unique vision of the characters and iconic scenes, infusing new meanings and perspectives into the tragic love story.
Highlights of the Collection
One of the main pieces in the collection is “The Balcony Scene: The Essence of Love Defined.” This piece captures the iconic moment when Romeo and Juliet declare their eternal love. I aimed to represent the purity and intensity of their emotions through a combination of vibrant colors and innovative painting techniques. You can find more information about this piece and others in the collection here.
Public Reactions
The reactions from the audience at the event were incredible. Many people spent a long time admiring the pieces, captivated by the details and emotional depth. I noticed that many visitors scanned the QR code for more information, showing a genuine and deep interest in my work.
I had the chance to speak with the Governor of Windsor Castle, who was very pleased with my work. His approval added another layer of satisfaction to the day.
Pre-Event Preparations
Preparing for the event was quite a journey. The artworks were in the United States, so transporting them to the UK and reframing them posed significant challenges. However, seeing everything perfectly set up at Windsor Castle made all the effort worthwhile. An interesting detail is that due to high security protocols at the castle, the company providing the exhibition panels was not permitted on the castle grounds. This created a logistical challenge for displaying the artworks. In a unique solution, the Royal military stepped in and constructed the panels on my behalf.
I chose Windsor Castle because I wanted to do something big that would create an impact. Shakespeare was from London, so I wanted to create a connection with the UK and the royal family. Windsor Castle, with its history and grandeur, was the perfect location for this event.
Meeting Prince Edward
One of the most exciting moments was meeting His Royal Highness Prince Edward. On Saturday, July 8, 2024, we sat down together at the castle, sipping tea and discussing politics and art. Edward was extremely curious about the details, being a culture enthusiast. He asked where I was from and if I was residing in the UK. It was an honor to discuss the inspirations and ideas behind my works with him.
To celebrate the occasion, the field in front of the castle was transformed into a dreamlike scene with a military parade. This event honored the presence of Prince Edward, King Charles III’s brother, adding a touch of majesty to an already unforgettable day. The parade included the Royal Guard in traditional uniform, and seeing it live was simply breathtaking.
Behind the Scenes
The event’s organization saw contributions from many key people, including the Oppo Foundation, Stacy Francis, Jamie Baulch, Cheryl Hicks (Jamie’s wife), and Melissa Farry. Their support and dedication were crucial to the success of the exhibition. The day was filled with tension and emotion, especially due to intermittent rain, which made organizing quite challenging.
The director of the PAAM museum in Miami Mr. Franklin Sirmans congratulated me on my work, a recognition that filled me with pride. Receiving positive feedback from other artists, art critics, and experts in the field was incredibly gratifying and motivated me to keep pushing the boundaries of my art.
A new take on Romeo and Juliet that will surprise you
Introduction:
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is perhaps one of the most famous and romantic stories of all time.
The story, originally Italian and popularized by the Bard, is a cocktail of magnetism, drama, violence, and passion.
There is everything needed to make the story of two young people who may not have existed into something that will live on forever.
The plot has been revisited by a great many authors, so each of us, regardless of age, has a version of it in mind.
For example, a celebrated and famous version is portrayed with Leonardo DiCaprio, in a modern Verona that seems to come out of the local chronicles.
Yet something is not quite right.
What I talk about in this article
- Introduction:Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is a famous and romantic story, mixing magnetism, drama, violence and passion.
- Original story message: The story offers a lesson on what not to do as a family, couple or in relation to others, showing the tragic consequences of hatred and selfishness.
- Actuality of the story: Despite being set in the past, the story still reflects issues relevant today, such as the consequences of our actions on each other and the responsibility of our choices.
- New Interpretation: A possible revisiting of the story could focus on the idea that in order to maintain a relationship, it is sometimes necessary to abandon one's selfishness and metaphorically transform into something else.
What is the message that the original story of Romeo and Juliet leaves us with?
The bitter taste of defeat, the inability to be able to live together, and the escape from reality are what the viewer is left with when the curtain falls on the story.
It is true that families eventually reconcile, but at what cost?
The two lovers will never be able to experience their love, not to mention the hatred and revenge that permeate the entire plot from the first act.
What is left for the viewer?
The bitter taste of defeat, the inability to be able to live together, and the escape from reality are what the viewer is left with when the curtain falls on the story.
What is the value of the story of Romeo and Juliet that we should not underestimate?
If we were parents, there would not be much we could use in this matter to teach our children.
So perhaps the message the story leaves us with is what not to do: what not to do as a family, as a couple, as a relationship.
I don’t think any of us would ever want to have a child like Romeo or Juliet, or find out that the children we care so much about are involved in such a tragic relationship.
Thus, the story shows an extreme situation. The consequences of one’s hatred, of one’s selfishness, can fall on others, on innocents whom we would never want to hurt.
Here is the message that the original story can offer.
How can a 500-year-old play still be relevant today?
Here, then, is how a 500-year-old story is still paradoxically relevant today.
Our conduct, our actions perhaps do not fall directly on us, but they can hinder.
The hatred of the two families results in death and abandonment, in which the two tender lovers are the victims of a struggle in which nothing matters to them.
"The consequences of one's hatred, of one's selfishness, can fall on others, on innocents whom we would never want to hurt."
– Alex, about Romeo and Juliet’s message.
How is it possible to give a new interpretation?
Brilliant, perfect plot. Which has a really positive moral despite everything. How then is it possible to add anything else to this almost perfect balance?
As an artist, I used the story to get a new point of view that I hope will bring additional food for thought.
What if instead of dying, in order to be together they had to eliminate their egos? What if that final and extreme act is, instead of the end, a metaphor for a journey?
A new interpretation could change the meaning of the story.
The action of changing, metamorphosis, occurs by abandoning part of the self.
Like an insect that must shed its container in order to rise and grow, so the two lovers are forced to shed their inner egos, which would otherwise condemn them to being prisoners.
Thus, shedding one’s “selfishness,” one’s “darkness,” allows the relationship to survive.
A documentary to illustrate the new interpretation
In this artwork described by about 20 paintings, the path of change is then illustrated.
the plot of the two young men from verona is told atrtraverso paintings that become visual chapters
with which the reader follows the new plot.
Where to see the art collection
This collection attracted and received the admiration of thousands of people during Art Basel art week in Miami. Many people had the opportunity to see the collection in person and hear the narration in person.
The collection will be exhibited in verona, italy as the next stop.
In conclusion
An exhibition, then, suitable for art lovers, but also for those who are looking for a path that, through art, induces the hope not only of finding one’s partner, but also of knowing how to preserve that relationship once created.
