Introduction:

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is perhaps one of the most famous and romantic stories of all time.

The story, originally Italian and popularized by the Bard, is a cocktail of magnetism, drama, violence, and passion.

There is everything needed to make the story of two young people who may not have existed into something that will live on forever.

The plot has been revisited by a great many authors, so each of us, regardless of age, has a version of it in mind.

For example, a celebrated and famous version is portrayed with Leonardo DiCaprio, in a modern Verona that seems to come out of the local chronicles.

Yet something is not quite right.

What I talk about in this article

  • Introduction:Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is a famous and romantic story, mixing magnetism, drama, violence and passion.
  • Original story message: The story offers a lesson on what not to do as a family, couple or in relation to others, showing the tragic consequences of hatred and selfishness.
  • Actuality of the story: Despite being set in the past, the story still reflects issues relevant today, such as the consequences of our actions on each other and the responsibility of our choices.
  • New Interpretation: A possible revisiting of the story could focus on the idea that in order to maintain a relationship, it is sometimes necessary to abandon one's selfishness and metaphorically transform into something else.

What is the message that the original story of Romeo and Juliet leaves us with?

The bitter taste of defeat, the inability to be able to live together, and the escape from reality are what the viewer is left with when the curtain falls on the story.

It is true that families eventually reconcile, but at what cost?

The two lovers will never be able to experience their love, not to mention the hatred and revenge that permeate the entire plot from the first act.

What is left for the viewer?

The bitter taste of defeat, the inability to be able to live together, and the escape from reality are what the viewer is left with when the curtain falls on the story.

What is the value of the story of Romeo and Juliet that we should not underestimate?

If we were parents, there would not be much we could use in this matter to teach our children.
So perhaps the message the story leaves us with is what not to do: what not to do as a family, as a couple, as a relationship.

I don’t think any of us would ever want to have a child like Romeo or Juliet, or find out that the children we care so much about are involved in such a tragic relationship.

Thus, the story shows an extreme situation. The consequences of one’s hatred, of one’s selfishness, can fall on others, on innocents whom we would never want to hurt.

Here is the message that the original story can offer.

How can a 500-year-old play still be relevant today?

Here, then, is how a 500-year-old story is still paradoxically relevant today.

Our conduct, our actions perhaps do not fall directly on us, but they can hinder.

The hatred of the two families results in death and abandonment, in which the two tender lovers are the victims of a struggle in which nothing matters to them.

"The consequences of one's hatred, of one's selfishness, can fall on others, on innocents whom we would never want to hurt."

– Alex, about Romeo and Juliet’s message.

How is it possible to give a new interpretation?

Brilliant, perfect plot. Which has a really positive moral despite everything. How then is it possible to add anything else to this almost perfect balance?

As an artist, I used the story to get a new point of view that I hope will bring additional food for thought.

What if instead of dying, in order to be together they had to eliminate their egos? What if that final and extreme act is, instead of the end, a metaphor for a journey?

A new interpretation could change the meaning of the story.

The action of changing, metamorphosis, occurs by abandoning part of the self.

Like an insect that must shed its container in order to rise and grow, so the two lovers are forced to shed their inner egos, which would otherwise condemn them to being prisoners.

Thus, shedding one’s “selfishness,” one’s “darkness,” allows the relationship to survive.

A documentary to illustrate the new interpretation

In this artwork described by about 20 paintings, the path of change is then illustrated.

with which the reader follows the new plot.

In conclusion

An exhibition, then, suitable for art lovers, but also for those who are looking for a path that, through art, induces the hope not only of finding one’s partner, but also of knowing how to preserve that relationship once created.
